Categories of System

In accordance with BS 5839-1 there are eight categories of fire alarm and detection systems, dependant on whether the system required is purely manual or incorporates automatic fire detection.

M – Manual System

Category M systems are manual systems and rely on the occupants of the building discovering the fire and acting to warn others by operating the system.

L - Life Safety System

L5
A non prescriptive system in which protected areas and/or the location of detectors is designed to satisfy a specific fire risk objective (other than that of L1 to L4)

L4
Automatic fire detection installed in escape routes comprising circulation areas and spaces such as corridors and stairways.

L3
Automatic fire detection installed in escape routes and rooms opening onto these routes

L2
Automatic fire detection installed in defined areas in addition to L3

L1
Automatic fire detection installed throughout all areas of the building.

P - Property Protection System

P2
Automatic fire detection installed only in defined areas

P1
Automatic fire detection installed throughout all areas
